We have systematically investigated structural and ferroelectric properties of A-and B-site co-doped BiFeO 3 thin films using the composition spread technique. X-ray diffraction and polarization hysteresis loop measurements reveal that the co-doped (Bi,Sm)(Fe,Sc)O 3 exhibits the structural transition from the rhombohedral to an or-thorhombic structural phase which is accompanied by a double-hysteresis behavior in the polarization hysteresis loop. We find that the phase transition takes place at Sm ∼14% independent of the Sc composition. This clearly indicates the significance of the A-site dopant on structural and ferroelectric properties in BiFeO 3 .

INVITED FEATURE PAPERS Review Combinatorial search of structural transitions: Systematic investigation of morphotropic phase boundaries in chemically substituted BiFeO3

We review our work on combinatorial search and investigation of morphotropic phase boundaries (MPBs) in chemically substituted BiFeO3 (BFO). Utilizing the thin-film composition spread technique, we discovered that rare-earth (RE 5 Sm, Gd, and Dy) substitution into the A-site of the BFO lattice results in a structural phase transition from the rhombohedral to the orthorhombic phase. At the struc...

Structural Instability of Epitaxial (001) BiFeO3 Thin Films under Tensile Strain

We explore BiFeO3 under tensile strain using first-principles calculations. We find that the actual structures are more complex than what had been previously thought, and that there is a strong shear deformation type structural instability which modifies the properties. Specifically, we find that normal tensile strain leads to structural instabilities with a large induced shear deformation in (...

Stabilisation of Fe2O3-rich Perovskite Nanophase in Epitaxial Rare-earth Doped BiFeO3 Films

Researchers have demonstrated that BiFeO3 exhibits ferroelectric hysteresis but none have shown a strong ferromagnetic response in either bulk or thin film without significant structural or compositional modification. When remanent magnetisations are observed in BiFeO3 based thin films, iron oxide second phases are often detected. Using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron micros...

Domain Control in Multiferroic BiFeO3 through Substrate Vicinality

Control over ferroelectric polarization variants in BiFeO3 films through the use of various vicinal SrTiO3 substrates is demonstrated. The ferroelectric polarization variants in these films are characterized by piezoelectric force microscopy and the corresponding structural variants are carefully analyzed and confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Implementation of this approach has given us the abili...
